Alaya Tea
Alaya Tea is a tea company that procures loose leaf tea from organic and biodynamic farms in India. Indian and women-owned, Alaya comes from the word “Himalaya,” the region where they source most of their tea from and a land in which high quality tea grows. As a result of drinking chai everyday, traveling and visiting the Himalayas and tea estates, the co-founders set out to create a company that honored those tea communities. Alaya additionally hopes to address agriculture’s environmental impact through their work. They source and buy their teas and herbs directly from certified organic and biodynamic tea estates and organic farms that are switching to regenerative agriculture. By buying directly, unlike many tea companies, they are able to pay farmers a higher price for their crops which in turn, allows them to invest funds into their farming practices and their workers. Furthermore, the bags in which the loose leaf tea is packaged in are 100% compostable, including the zipper, label, and adhesive. While devoting their time and energy to Indian farmers that are laying the groundwork for regenerative agriculture is Alaya’s underlying mission, they aspire to elevate the tea culture in America.
