Maui Nui
Maui, along with the entire Hawaiian archipelago, is the most isolated landmass on the planet, home to more endemic (existing nowhere else) as well endangered species per square mile than anywhere else in the world. Key in Maui Nui's mission to help balance Mauiʻs growing Axis deer population is to aid in protecting the islandsʻ incredible biodiversity. Our work to bring down Mauiʻs overall deer numbers primarily takes place on ranch lands where we work with our local ranchers to address population numbers on private land.
Maui Nui sources venison from an innovative field operation, the only one of its kind in the world, that actively and mindfully manages Mauiʻs deer populations using FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) technology. This technology allows for truly wild and stress-free harvesting that takes place entirely at night. In addition, FLIR technology also allows Maui Nui to collect and compile highly accurate population data for the land managers with which they work with as well as their community stakeholders.
The USDA-approved label, “wild-harvested,” found on the packaging and throughout the story of Maui Nui is a singular one, a claim, and process you wonʻt see anywhere else. The seemingly simple act of putting a USDA stamp on a wild-harvested Axis deer is something Maui Nui is really proud of. Itʻs the culmination of a decade of research and field trials, and itʻs what makes Maui Nui's venison so unique.
