12 Tides creates the world’s first regenerative organic kelp snack. As kelp farming becomes a popular and quickly growing industry in the US, they source from small scale farmers in Maine. Because seaweed thrives on cold and clean water, Maine has perfect conditions to grow superior kelp. Co-founder Pat Schnettler began his journey with the ocean as a scuba diver, then to a rescue diver where he began to work in the seafood industry as well. He saw firsthand the negative impact America was having on the ocean (overfishing, pollution, coastline destruction) which in turn, led him to want to create a snack that would leave a positive impact on the ocean. Choosing kelp was an easy choice - kelp is a climate change superhero in the fact that it removes CO2 from the ocean, which improves water quality for marine life. Kelp is also self sufficient in that it doesn’t require fresh water, arable land, pesticides or fertilizers, making it sustainable. By turning kelp into a snack, 12 Tides hopes to educate consumers and save the planet through one of its largest ecosystems. They contribute 1% of sales to the non-profit SeaTrees, who aid in the restoration of natural kelp forests in California. Lastly, 12 Tides packs their packs in compostable pouches so that no plastic ends up in the ocean.
